Boombox Caerdydd

Following the success of TAPE and In the Eyes of the Animal, Migrations and RSPB Cymru, in partnership with the City of Cardiff Council, invite you to take part in Boombox Caerdydd.

In collaboration with USA artist Ely Kim, we are filming 100 people dancing to their favourite music in their favourite green spaces.

The resulting short film will be a celebration of dancing, wild Cardiff and its communities, and will be screened at a live event in the city followed by a 'disco' with Ely Kim himself.

Tell me more...

We’re looking for 100 people who live, work or play in Cardiff to film in their favourite green space, dancing to their favourite music.

What kind of green space can I choose?

Anywhere that’s a home for nature in Cardiff and that means something special to you. From an allotment to your back garden, an amazing street tree or a park. Big or small. Well known or tucked away. It’s your choice.

What music can I choose?

Your favourite music to dance to. Pop, rock, jazz, classsical - it’s completely up to you.

Who can get involved?

Anyone and everyone, young or old, who lives, works or plays in Cardiff. You don’t have to be a professional dancer and no previous experience is required, it’s all about having fun outdoors.

What do I need to do?

Choose your favourite piece of music to dance to and your favourite green space in Cardiff, then select the date and time you’re available.

Meet us there with your dancing feet at the ready and we'll do the rest.

I want to take part!

Just complete this simple form:
Your top three favourite green spaces in Cardiff; anywhere that’s a home for nature.
Your favourite music to dance to. Give us all details e.g. title and artist, so we can track it down.

Tell me more about Ely Kim?

Ely Kim is an artist, art director and dancer based in Brooklyn, New York. His greatest influences are "growing up in Las Vegas, puppies and crystals". In his original Boombox, he filmed himself dancing secretly in 100 places over 100 days.

Can I dance with someone else or a pet?

This experience is about you, your music and your green space. You can bring someone with you, but only to watch. It normally works best if you come alone, but please note children under sixteen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

How long will it take?

It varies - plan for an hour but should take less. We'll explain to you what will happen, set up the equipment and then film you for around three minutes dancing to your favourite music. If you’re happy with the idea, we may also ask you some questions about the music and place you’ve chosen. This normally takes another fifteen minutes.

What happens to the film?

The film will be screened at a premiere that you, your friends and family are invited too. You'll also receive a copy of the film on DVD. The film will then be available online and promoted by the RSPB and Migrations. The film may also be shown at international film festivals.

The film will be owned jointly by Migrations and RSPB. Both organisations are charities or not for profit.

Where has the money for Boombox Caerdydd come from?

Funding for the project comes entirely from the Arts Council of Wales, Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Tesco customers through the Welsh Government’s carrier bag levy.

Yes, we'll ask you to sign a simple and standard 'release form' which states you're happy to be in the film.

Is there an age limit?

There’s no upper age limit. Children must be at least five years old on the day they are filmed. All children under sixteen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Can my child take part?

Yes. As long as they are at least five years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children will need to choose their own music and location and must dance on their own.

How many people will be filming me?

Just one person with a camera and a boombox playing your favourite music.

When will the film be finished?

We expect the film to be finished in Autumn 2017. We'll keep you informed as the project develops.

Is it just one film you're making?

We're making a single film of 100 people dancing. We may also produce a 'making of' style documentary. If you'd like to be involved in this, we'll ask you a few questions about your favourite place, music and dancing when we meet you.

Will everyone be able to take part?

There are only 100 places so we may not be able to film everyone who wants to take part. If we can't fit you in, we will let you know as soon as possible and you will still receive an invitation to the film launch.
