The Gathering / Yr Helfa

Dogs and sheep in the dance of the slopes,
the mountain deep in animal mind,
hefting the weight, treading the shape of it,
the knowledge, cynefin
in their bones, nerves, blood

A powerful exploration of the annual cycle of sheep-farming, The Gathering/Yr Helfa is the culmination of three years’ observation of life at Hafod Y Llan, a working hill farm on Snowdon.

Join National Theatre Wales for a remarkable journey on foot through installations and performances, inspired by this iconic location, its day-to-day workings, its history and its people.

Created and directed by Louise Ann Wilson, this production will feature new poetry by Wales’ national poet, Gillian Clarke, with sound, film, and movement.

What to Expect

Please read the audience information very carefully: we want you to have the best experience at Snowdonia and this vital information will tell you what you can expect and what you need to bring in order to ensure your full enjoyment, safety and comfort while at The Gathering/Yr Helfa.

The Gathering/Yr Helfa will be performed on the farm and at the foot-hills of Snowdon, and will take place outdoors on the mountain, rain or shine.

You will be going on a six-kilometer journey on foot. Please be aware that this means walking and standing for a lot of the show, and that the route is challenging at times and includes some steady ascent, uneven terrain and a steep section.

Unfortunately, the route is not accessible by wheelchair or suitable for pushchairs, and the production is not suitable for babies in arms or small children due to the challenging nature of the production journey.

We will provide guidance on accessible options for people with access requirements. Please contact rhianlewis@nationaltheatrewales.org to discuss.

Please be aware that audience members must be prepared for the mountain. Sturdy walking boots are essential, as are waterproofs and suitable clothing for all weather, bottled water and sunscreen. Please travel lightly, with a small rucksack containing everything you need for the day, including water. Light refreshments will be provided during the show.

Management reserve the right to refuse entry to the performance to anyone not prepared for being on the mountain. Those without necessary clothing and footwear will not be allowed to take part in the performance.
